Sash colours and their meanings

[NO SASH] This is where everyone starts. At this level the student is either a complete beginner or newcomer to our club with some previous martial arts experience. The emphasis at this level is core skills and basic martial arts techniques to get the student to some level of fighting proficiency as soon as possible. During this level the student will learn: Safety in stretching and Warming up Basic stance Basic guard 4 main Wing Chun punches Main kicks Simple Chi Sau Defending, especially covering up and deflecting Simple infighting

[RED SASH] This is the first Sash level and shows the student has developed some martial arts skills and also that he or she has demonstrated the ability to learn new ideas. During this level the student will learn: Combos Chi Sau Common Wing Chun hand positions Evading, Repelling and Intercepting defences Counter shots Other strikes such as Knife hands, elbows, knees and head butts Simple street fighting drills Kicking and kicking defence Basic footwork 1st Form (Siu Lim Tau – small idea form)

[BLUE SASH] This level is the threshold for attending the Intermediate classes. The student has demonstrated that they are a full martial artist and capable of understanding more advanced theories. During this level the student will learn: Structure Angular and Positional Control Advanced street fighting drills Advanced infighting Logical positional progression Footwork Vital points Entry techniques Street Fighting drills Knife defence Group fighting Pole form and Wing chun grappling techniques 2nd Form (Chum Kiu – seeking the bridge form) Full contact sparring (if student is willing and able) Primary style

[PURPLE SASH] This level shows that the student has now learnt some of the speciality techniques of wing chun and can use them against other martial arts. A Purple level student has a good understanding of some of the more advanced fighting techniques. During this level the student will learn: Advanced structure Counterfighting Advanced Street Fighting Leg trapping, body trapping and positional trapping Limb destruction The 21 hands of wing chun Mad man sparring Blindfolded techniques Basic wooden dummy techniques Anti-grappling Identifying weaknesses Advanced combos 3rd Form (Bil Gee – thrusting fingers form) Secondary style

[BROWN SASH] The student is now an advanced practitioner of wing chun and has a good understanding of many theories and skills. At this stage the student also trains to become an Assistant Instructor. During this level the student will learn: Advanced footwork Advanced Chi Sau Advanced striking techniques such as Phoenix Eye punches, Bear paw strikes and Mantis strikes Advanced bare-knuckle punches Adapting Wooden Dummy Form Basic Wing Chun knife techniques Environmental Trapping Psychological Trapping Tertiary style

[BLACK SASH] At this stage all basic training is completed and the student has become a fully fledged fighter. There is an excellent knowledge of all wing chun theories and tactics. The student may wish to train as an Instructor at this stage. During this level the student will learn: Advanced structure, angles and positions Advanced weakness identification Advanced entry techniques Heavy contact sparring 8 Cutting Blades Form Ghost hands Hybrid style Chameleon style
