About Us

Nottingham Wing Chun

Nottingham Wing Chun is taught in an informal atmosphere in the Hub in the Portland Building. The instructors and senior members have all been practicing Wing Chun and other martial arts for years and will know the best ways for you to be taught in order to progress and improve your technique and prowess in self-defence and martial arts. Most have also been Nottingham University students, so they know what life as a student is like. If you miss a session, it's no problem.

We like to engage in the social side  of University as well. Unlike many martial arts clubs where you'll turn up twice a week, hit some people for two hours and then leave, at Nottingham Wing Chun we'll encourage members to come and relax in the pub with us after sessions. We also organise a load of social events such as pizza nights, film screenings or nights out in the city.

There is no Sports Centre membership needed to join, so that saves you a lot of money!

What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific martial art, a style of Kung Fu that originates from China and was later refined in Hong Kong. Wing Chun's specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. The effectiveness of Wing Chun is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vice versa. Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self defence.

The style uses kicks, sweeps, palm strikes, punches, trapping and control techniques as part of its everyday fighting arsenal.

It is one of the most popular and sought after martial arts in the world and its techniques can be seen in many action films including Sherlock Holmes and Bangkok Dangerous. It is used by many famous martial artists, including, most famously, Bruce Lee.

Joining our club

If you like what you've seen here, and want to join the club to get some experience of the most popular form of martial art in the world, then all you have to do is come along during the Welcome Fair and speak to us on the stall to get your barcode, or join up online by registering and adding our club to your basket.

There is no sports centre membership required to join our club or attend our classes.

Membership is £3 for the entire year, and we charge £3 per session (your first session is free!) We also do annual and term passes as discounted rates.

All you need to do is head on down to one of our classes during the week on Tuesdays or Thursdays at C Floor Portland Building, 7:30pm!

Equipment

When you join there will be no need for any specific equipment. There is also no need for any specialised clothing or garments such as a gi. As you progress further into the use of Wing Chun, gloves, gumsheilds, shin guards and groin guards may be neccessary, but can be purchased from the committee and the club at low prices.

There are club T-shirts, hoodies and trousers that can be bought from the committee, which look great as a way to show off your new martial art.
