I'm just curious, what made you choose wing chun as the martial art you were going to learn? What did you want to get from learning it? I for one chose wing chun because I wanted self defence, and wing chun seemed like a good one for someone of my build. It seemed realistic, effective and good for the sort of situations where I would be most likely to have to use self defence. I also had a friend from before uni who came to the UoN club who recommended it to me, meaning I tried it at a club at home, and then when I happened to come to the same uni, joined here. What about you guys?

I’d always wanted to learn martial arts but was put off by the image of overly strict instructors and having to bow every two minutes. When I was younger, I got through most fights by being bigger and stronger, but as I got into my late teens, I realised that wouldn’t be enough. So I went to Freshers’ Fair, talked to the Wing Chun people and realised it was the opposite of all the things that had put me off other arts. I thought I’d give it a go and see if I liked it - I figured I might as well make my hobby something that would have some real practical use. 18 years later and I realise it has been one of the best choices I ever made.
I also wanted to learn self defence, I was just kind of sick of walking home and feeling vulnerable and martial arts seemed a good way to deal with that.
My original reason for picking wing chun instead of one of the other martial arts at the uni was entirely due to the fact that this club didn't need a gym membership and whoever I talked to at freshers fair was really friendly :D
I think it took all of one taster session for me to feel like i'd definitely made a good choice. The stuff we learn seems realistic to me and I just really like the concept based nature of Wing Chun, it might be harder to understand than "do this specific move, followed by this one" but it also feels a hell of a lot more realistic.
